YOUNG PEOPLE'S STATEMENT ON POSITIVE FOR YOUTH
10.01.2012IARS young people welcome the Government’s Positive for Youth which aims to place the views of young people and the youth sector at the centre of its cross-Governmental policy.
Dr. Theo Gavrielides, IARS Director said: "We are pleased to see the Government make this bold statement of support towards young people. In particular, we welcome Tim Loughton, Parliamentary Under- Secretary for Children and Young People's, rejection of negative stereotypes of teenagers and his assertion that 99% of our young people are already responsible and hardworking and want to make the most of their lives and make the world a better place. This intention is aligned with our work at IARS and through the 99% Campaign. We hope that our young people get the support they need to achieve their vision for a stronger and more inclusive society".
The Minister’s sentiments echo the objectives of IARS’ 99% Campaign which highlights the positive contributions that young people are making to society. Tim Loughton recently met with some of the young volunteers who participate in the 99% Campaign and applauded their hard work.
During this meeting the Minister also commented on IARS’ Youth Policy Response Group’s submission to the Positive for Youth consultation which drew attention to the importance of placing young people at the centre of decision making processes on matters that impact on their lives. The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss some of the concerns that the group had in relation to the National Citizens Service. In particular, these concerns related to the suitability of the programme for all young people and its effectiveness in getting young people engaged in long term, meaningful volunteering opportunities.
IARS look forward to seeing the Government’s commitment to a society that is positive for youth being brought into fruition. At a time when young people, in particular, are bearing the brunt of the economic downturn it is essential that a real commitment to young people, both through policy and through funding is realised. We look forward to supporting the Minister and working closely with our partners in the sector to ensure this reality.
